Description

124-136 High Street is a terrace of seven houses, some of which have been converted into flats. The buildings date from around 1700, with early 19th-century alterations. They are constructed of brown brick in English bond with ashlar dressings and feature a steeply pitched hipped pantile roof with four large ridge stacks.

The exterior consists of three storeys plus a cellar, showcasing a palace front of 18 bays, with the central six bays slightly advanced. There is a plinth with an ashlar sill band, and full-height pilasters divide the bays, linked by segmental arches with keystones. The eaves course is corbelled and dentilled, and there is a moulded cornice at the lead wall head gutter. All doors are accessed by four stone steps.

The openings generally have segmental heads and keystones. At the centre, there are two sash windows flanked by a single doorway and another sash. Both doorways feature semi-circular heads and traceried fanlights, with the door to the right having two narrow leaves. To the right, there are two blank bays and a two-leaf door with an overlight, flanked by a single sash and a blank end bay. To the left, there is a blank bay, a door with an overlight, a single sash, and further blank bays with a blocked segmental arch, another sash, and a doorway. Above the window bays on the upper floors, there are eight sashes, with the second-floor sashes being smaller. All sashes have glazing bars and segmental heads. The pilastered treatment continues around the sides and rear.

At the rear, there are single-storey kitchen blocks, additional sashes, Yorkshire sliding sashes, and modern inserted openings. The interior retains corner fireplace positions, panelled doors, and contemporary roof construction with braced posts.
