Description
The Church of St Matthew is a Grade II listed building located in Chilcote, rebuilt in 1885. It features a small nave, chancel, and a north porch that is timber framed and dates from around 1900. There is also an outshut vestry with an ashlar stack on the south wall of the chancel. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and has a plain tiled roof with two shades arranged in wide bands, topped with bright red ridge tiles. It has clasping buttresses with set-offs and a bellcote at the west end. The windows, which have hood-moulds, include two on the north side of the nave, one in the chancel, and three on the south side of the nave, all featuring curvilinear tracery. The east window has reticulated tracery, while the west window is square in Perpendicular style.
Inside, the church has bare ashlar walls and a roof with four bays that reuses a previous 14th or 15th-century king post roof. Animals are carved into the centre of the tie beams, although the bosses are missing. The intermediate struts and braces have a waved outline. Some windows contain late 19th or early 20th-century stained glass. The church also features a contemporary font, pulpit, and some furnishings. It was given by the Robertson family of the nearby Chilcote Hall, which has since been demolished, and there is a tablet inside recording this and the date of rebuilding.
