Description

This is a house, dated 1789, as indicated by a brick inscription on the rear wing, with later 19th-century sash windows. It is constructed of red brick on a dressed stone plinth, with a 20th-century interlocking tile roof and brick chimneys. The building follows an L-shaped plan, with a 19th-century extension to the rear wing. The main front has three storeys and cellars, and is three bays wide, with the central bay slightly projecting. There is a brick eaves cornice with corbelled dentils. The windows are late 19th-century sashes without glazing bars, set in slender moulded architraves. All windows are within original openings, square in shape to the second floor, and retain original shaped plaster lintels incorporating oval fan motifs. The central entrance has a half-glazed door within a wooden doorcase featuring an architrave frame, fluted frieze on fluted brackets, and a moulded pediment. The entrance is approached by five stone steps, now concreted over, with fragmentary iron railings. The rear wing has a tall stair window and 3-light wooden casements with transoms, the upper window having been altered. A two-storey 19th-century extension features a 3-light horizontal sash window to the first floor and a 20th-century casement and door below. A large, early 20th-century, two-storey canted bay window is located to the rear of the left bay of the front wing. Inside, the house retains a simple contemporary staircase with stick balusters and cut scrolls to the string, and one fireplace with delicate Adam-style decorative detail on the first floor to the right.
