Description

The Gables is a late 18th-century house with 19th-century extensions to the rear wing and late 19th-century alterations to the front. The front is constructed of red brick on a rubble stone base, with 20th-century plain tiles to the roof’s pitch and 20th-century interlocking tiles to the rear. The brick gable copings and chimneys were renewed in the 20th century. It is an L-shaped building, with a three-bay front. A brick eaves cornice features corbelled dentils, painted white. The windows are late 19th-century sashes without glazing bars, slightly wider than the original openings, but retaining their original painted brick heads with keystones. Five stone steps lead to a central 19th-century six-panelled, top-lit door within a moulded wooden frame with a panelled frieze, beneath a late 19th-century gabled timber porch. Attic casements are found in the gable ends. The rear of the main block features a projection to the right with two gables, and a 19th-century lean-to to the left. A tall staircase window is in the centre gable. A two-storey bay projects from the right gable, slightly later than the main block, with three-light horizontal sashes; the upper window is transomed and small-paned, and a later two-light window is to the ground floor left. This bay has a 19th-century extension with a six-light horizontal sash to the oversailing upper storey, likely used as a workshop, with a door in the gable end. Internally, the house features an 18th-century staircase with turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and a closed string. 19th-century doorcases are also present. The kitchen in the rear wing has an altered fireplace and built-in dresser shelves with slender turned supports.
