Description
This is a late 18th- and early 19th-century house, with 19th-century extensions and 20th-century alterations to the rear. The house is built of red brick on a dressed stone base, with wooden eaves and a slate roof, and has brick chimneys. It is three storeys high and has two bays. The ground and first floors have boxed three-pane sash windows; the second floor has 20th-century wooden casements in square openings. All windows retain painted stucco voussoirs with triple keyblocks. A false six-panelled door, with a panelled fanlight, is set within a fine doorcase comprising slender fluted Doric columns with ringed necks, a fluted frieze, and a cornice hood. The entrance is approached by two concrete steps. A passage with an arched gateway is located to the left of the house. There are outshot and rear extensions, and a 20th-century entrance on the left side. The interior features a staircase with stick balusters and a front ground floor room remodelled around 1830-40, exhibiting a reeded ceiling cornice and foliated paterae. A cottage to the left of the house, and the associated outbuildings to the rear, now sometimes referred to as No 59A, are not included in the listing.
