Description

The Toll House is a former toll house for the Nottingham-Tamworth road, now serving as a house. It dates from around 1830 and has had minor 20th-century alterations and rear extensions. The building features whitewashed roughcast walls and a hipped slate roof, with a central whitewashed roughcast chimney. It is a single storey structure with three bays, where the central bay projects and is canted. There is a slight chamfered plinth and flat eaves. The original two-light casement windows are in a Tudor-Gothick style, set in rectangular openings with Gothick leaded glazing in arched wooden frames. Each window is topped with a heavy hood supported by shaped scroll brackets. The central doorway, which also has a similar hood, has been partially blocked and replaced by a smaller matching window that is old and possibly resited. The current entry is through a 20th-century door located on the right side of the projection, which is sheltered by a small 20th-century porch featuring a hipped roof and leaded glazing. To the right, there is a 20th-century flat-roofed extension that includes a three-light barred wooden casement window at the front and an entry on the right side.
