Description
Tonge Hall Farmhouse and the attached barn are located in Breedon-on-the-Hill. The farmhouse likely dates from the late 17th to early 18th century but has been altered and extended in the early to mid-19th century. Some of the casement windows were renewed in the 20th century. The barn is believed to be from the late 16th to 17th century.
The farmhouse is constructed of red brick, with some 18th-century brick and vitreous headers on the left wing and rear. It features plain tile roofs with brick gable copings and chimneys. The building has an irregular T-plan, with a later outshot in the narrow left angle and an additional 19th-century wing projecting to the rear. It has two storeys, and the two-bay wing projecting to the left includes a large external chimney stack on the front gable. Stone surrounds of former 17th to 18th-century windows are found on either side of the stack. The right return of this wing has early to mid-19th-century sash windows, mostly with four panes, but there is a five-pane sash on the ground floor to the left. Another ground floor window features a segmental arch.
Set back to the right is the main wing, which has two bays of 20th-century transomed wooden casements, with a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window above. The lower windows have segmental heads. In the centre of this wing is a blind first-floor window panel and a 19th-century six-panelled door within a fine wooden doorcase that includes panelled reveals, Doric pilasters, an entablature, and a moulded pediment.
Attached to the left end of the farmhouse is a five-bay barn, which has substantial timber framing with diagonal braces, brick infill, and a stone plinth. It also features a plain tile roof, with the lower walls and second bay partially rebuilt in brick. The interior of the house may be of interest.
