Description

Charnwood Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th to 17th century, with significant refurbishment in the 20th century and flanking extensions from the 18th to 19th centuries. The structure features a timber frame with diagonal braces and large square panels filled with whitewashed render, although some timbers have been renewed in the 20th century. It has a stone plinth, a thatched roof, and a central brick chimney. The building is two storeys high with two bays. The 20th-century paired casements have diamond leading, and there is a central half-glazed door with a thatched porch.

To the right, there is a slightly taller extension from the late 18th to early 19th century, constructed of whitewashed roughcast with a tiled roof and similar casements. To the left, a single-storey extension, formerly a cowhouse, is also roughcast and whitewashed, dating from the later 19th century. Inside, the cottage features chamfered spine beams and an altered fireplace. The roof trusses are all different: the left has inset curved principals, the centre has tension braces to a low tie-beam at floor level, and the right includes queen struts.
