Description
Alton House, formerly known as Alton Grange, is a house built around 1800. The front is made of ashlar stone, while the sides are constructed from coursed, squared rubble, all resting on a continuous plinth. It features a low-pitched slate roof and stands two storeys high. The road-facing side has four bays, while the sides have three bays each, with central doorways that include round arched fanlights and six-panel doors. The doorway on the east front has a moulded architrave. The building has sash windows with glazing bars throughout and angle pilaster strips on the road front. The eaves are overhanging, and there is a central brick ridge stack.
Historically, George Stephenson purchased Alton Grange in 1833 and resided there until 1842 while he was developing mining operations on the Snibston estate.
