Description
Squire's Monument is a chest tomb topped by an elaborate monument, located 5 meters northwest of the Church of St. James in Burton Lazars. It was erected by the executors of William Squire, who died in 1781. The monument is made of limestone, which was formerly painted and gilt, and is enclosed by an iron railing.
The base features an oval plinth with three steps. The chest has a moulded design with corner volutes and an illegible inscribed panel on the south side. Each end of the chest is adorned with a circular pier, decorated with relief panels that include symbols of Death, each topped by a globe. Above the chest is a sarcophagus supported by volutes, featuring an oval figurative panel at each end.
Rising above the sarcophagus is a tall, concave-sided obelisk, resting on four balls. This obelisk is decorated and has an oval perforation containing an urn, topped with a ball finial. Figures representing Faith and Hope are positioned against the obelisk. The entire monument stands approximately 6 meters high and is surrounded by a spiked railing.
