Description
This is an 18th-century house that was extensively remodelled in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stone sill bands and a slate roof. The building has a roughly rectangular plan and is located next to the Grade II-listed Toad Hall.
The two-storey house has a shallow hipped roof and an almost symmetrical facade. The central three bays form the main part of the front, flanked by double-height canted bays with an additional window bay on the right side. It features tall sash windows with four panes over four, containing slender glazing bars. A central projection provides shelter for the front door, which is topped with a keyed round arch decorated with polychromatic brickwork around the sides. To the west (left) of the main house is a lower, one-bay section, also in a similar style and featuring a full-height canted bay. A more recent single-storey addition, with a flat roof and two tall sash windows (six panes over six), has been added at some point. Attached to this western addition is Claret Lodge, a three-storey, two-bay building with a shallow pitched roof, which may represent part of an even earlier house. The first floor of Claret Lodge has two-over-two pane sash windows, while the second floor has two sashes with margin lights. The interior of the main house has not been inspected.
