Description
Anne of Cleves House is a medieval and later building located on Burton Street. It features coursed stone rubble and a steeply pitched slate roof. Although it has been significantly restored, much medieval work remains, including a 14th-century doorway with a moulded label on the rear elevation. The street-facing facade is two storeys high and has three 15th-century buttresses. The gabled north end includes a three-light moulded stone window with stone mullions, cusped arches, and a moulded label. At the south end of the facade, there is a small 18th-century bowed shop window with glazing bars. Overall, there are five windows with modern reproduction glazing in earlier openings. Inside, the building has exposed ceiling beams, some of which are chamfered. The association with Anne of Cleves may stem from the fact that the church was once a cell of Lewes Priory in Sussex, which provided her with jointure revenues. The listed buildings on Burton Street, including Nos 24 to 36 (even), form a group of local interest.
