Description
Maison Dieu Bedehouses is a grade II* listed building, constructed in 1640 and restored in 1890. These almshouses were a gift from Robert Hudson, a citizen and haberdasher of London, who was originally from Melton Mowbray. The building is made of coursed stone with a plinth and dressings, topped by a steeply pitched stone slate roof featuring three gables above the windows and central door.
The centre gable displays the Hudson Coat of Arms in stone, flanked by two small Ionic pilasters, a small cornice, and an inscription. The lintel of the central door is inscribed with "Maison Dieu 1640." The structure has two storeys, with a four-light window on the ground floor and a three-light window on the upper floor under each side gable. The central gable features a door with a moulded depressed stone arch, flanked by two-light windows, and a five-light window in the upper storey. All the windows are of 17th-century style (restored) with stone mullions and dripstones.
The listed buildings on Burton Street, including Nos 24 to 36 (even), form a group of local interest.
