Description

The Great Dalby War Memorial is a First World War memorial located on the village green in Great Dalby. It was unveiled on 25 July 1920 by former Private Harry Bonshor and dedicated by the Vicar, Reverend RC Dashwood. The memorial has been restored in 1992 and 2006.

The memorial is constructed from red Mountsorrel granite and is square in plan. It consists of a Latin cross placed upon a square plinth, which itself rests on a four-stepped base, all of granite. A decorative wrought iron railing, likely added in the early to mid-18th century, surrounds the memorial and sits upon a brick curb. The brick curb has been repaired at times, and concrete posts support the railings.

The inscription on the north face of the plinth reads “THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919/ TO OUR GLORIOUS/ DEAD”. The remaining faces of the plinth contain the names and rank of 11 men from the parish who died in the conflict. The memorial stands in a prominent location on the village green.
