Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church dating to the late 15th century. The chancel was rebuilt around 1840, and the church was restored and refitted in 1861 by H. Goddard. Further restoration and the addition of a north transept, bellcote, and porch occurred in 1869 by R. W. Johnson. The church is constructed of coursed and squared ironstone and limestone ashlar with ashlar dressings, and has Swithland slate roofs. It features a plinth, coped gables, a gabled lateral stack, and a large central buttress on the west end, flanked by single corner buttresses, with a molded gabled single bell turret above.

The south side has a buttress flanked by a late 15th century plain double lancet with a flat head, followed by a 19th-century double lancet with a flat head to the west of the porch. The north side has an off-centre buttress flanked on each side by a late 15th century plain double lancet with flat heads. The chancel east end has a Decorated triple lancet with a hood mould and stops from 1861. The north transept has a coped east gable with a cross and two flanking buttresses, and a Geometrical triple lancet with a hood mould and mask stops. Its west side features a late 15th century plain double lancet with a flat head, and the east side contains a restored roll-moulded 14th century doorway. The south porch has two flanking buttresses and a gable with a cross, a double chamfered and rebated doorway with a hood mould and stops, and a pair of wooden gates. Single chamfered lancets are set within each side of the porch, and the interior of the porch has a common rafter roof. The south doorway, dating back to the late 15th century, has a molded elliptical head and a restored hood mould.

Inside, the church has 19th-century roofs with arch braces on corbels and molded double purlins. A 19th-century aumbry sits on the north side of the chancel to the east. A stained glass window from 1890, by Winfield, is located at the east end of the chancel. Fittings from 1861 include an octagonal oak pulpit, stalls with poppyheads, roll-top benches, two prayer desks, and a low chancel screen. The church also contains a 15th-century style octagonal font (19th century) with a panelled bowl, along with a wooden war memorial plaque and roll of honour from 1919, and two 20th-century brasses. Stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are also present.
