Description

Ashby Folville Manor is a manor house, now used as offices, dating to the mid-17th century. It was largely rebuilt in 1893 in a similar style to designs by J. Ely, following a fire. The building is constructed of coursed and squared ironstone with limestone ashlar dressings, and has slate roofs. A chamfered rubble plinth and quoins are visible, along with coped gables featuring kneelers and obelisk finials. There are three ridge stacks and two lateral coped stone stacks. The manor house is arranged over three storeys plus attics, with a five-bay layout, based on an H-plan. Windows are cross and mullioned leaded casements with flat hood moulds and leaded glazing. Dormers have coped gables.

The symmetrical west front has a recessed three-bay centre with a two-storey tower porch, flanked by taller gabled wings. A central four-centred arched doorway is flanked by columns, and features a shield panel dated 1893 above it. Flanking the doorway are single, flat-roofed, balustraded bay windows, each with a triple casement. Above, each wing has a double casement. The porch’s canted central bay window has three casements, and above that are paired casements. Further windows include a smaller casement, a door, a round window, and further paired casements. The upper floors have dormers and additional casements, including a three-light casement in the gable. The return angle to the left on the west front has a second-floor casement and a dormer above it.

The south front features a central canted bay window with a balustraded gallery above it, flanked by single, keystoned round-headed arches with glazed doors. Beyond these are single, two-storey square bay windows with mullioned casements on each floor. A set-back bay to the right contains a casement. The upper floors include a four-centred arched doorway with a shaped hood, flanked by single, large casements. Dormers are situated above this level.

The north side has a central cross-mullioned casement flanked by single buttresses, with four setoffs. A casement is positioned to the left, and a chamfered doorway is to the right. A kitchen is located to the left, featuring two mullioned casements. To the right is a large cross eaves dormer. The upper floors have a central casement flanked to the left by a smaller casement and to the right by three casements of various sizes. Above, a central casement is flanked by a smaller casement to the left and two smaller stepped casements to the right.

The rear elevation includes a two-storey, parapeted, extruded corner porch, a service wing, a four-bay single-storey outbuilding with a coped wall, and a single-storey gabled kitchen. Stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are present.
