Description
Number 23 is a cottage located approximately 2 meters southeast of The Cottage and Kemp's Cottage. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and is constructed of whitewashed brick with a sour cob and pantile roof, featuring a brick stack at the left end. The cottage has a single-cell plan measuring about 2 meters by 3 meters and is a single storey with an attic.
The front wall is mostly blank, with a plank door on the left and a 2-light horizontal sliding sash window above it. There is a similar window on the right end, present on both floors, and a matching ground floor window at the rear. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have a single room on the ground floor with an open fireplace, a moulded wood surround covering a brick arch, a cast-iron range, and cupboards on either side. A ladder stair leads to the first floor, which contains two rooms, a plank door, and a small piece of balustrade.
This cottage is an extremely rare survival and is of particular interest because it retains the ladder stairs. It forms a group with The Cottage and Kemp's Cottage and is situated in the garden of the former.
