Description

The sculpture depicting Spring is located in the Belvoir Castle Sculpture Garden and dates from around 1680. It was created by Caius Gabriel Cibber. The sculpture is made of stone and features a square pedestal with recessed panels. Surrounding the pedestal are swags of carved fruit that do not align with the recessed panels. Above the pedestal, there is a cornice that includes a dentil course and an egg and dart frieze. The figure of Spring is an unclothed male, depicted striding forward while holding a bowl of seed in his right hand, which he is about to scatter. This sculpture is one of seven statues in the garden.
