Description
This barn, located 10 metres southeast of Gables Farmhouse, dates from the early 18th century with late 19th-century additions. It has re-used timber box framing, with reed and plaster and brick nogging, and features partial weatherboard cladding. The structure has rubble and brick plinths and Swithland slate roofs. The 19th-century additions are made of brick with slate roofs. The barn is single and two storeys high, consisting of four bays.
On the north side, there is a doorway to the left and a lean-to addition with two doors to the right. Beyond this is a lower addition featuring a 20th-century garage opening. The south side has four bay posts and three late 19th-century casement windows of different types. The east gable displays strutted framing and has a central unglazed two-light opening on each floor.
Inside, the barn contains chamfered span beams with barred ogee stops, a shaped door head, and a bolection moulded post. There is an 18th-century plank partition and a four-bay principal rafter roof with single notched purlin wind braces and collars. The span beams include arch braces, one of which is moulded, and there is a single moulded span beam. The floors are made of gypsum.
