Description
Gables Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the mid-17th century and early 18th century. It was refenestrated in the late 18th century, and has undergone alterations in the late 19th century and the 20th century. The building is constructed of random rubble and brick, with a Swithland slate roof. It features a rubble plinth, corbelled eaves, moulded brick verges, and two central brick ridge stacks. The layout is of a double range. The north end has a central gabled wooden porch set on a brick plinth, flanked by single three-light cross mullioned casement windows. Above the porch door is a two-light cross mullioned casement, flanked by single three-light cross mullioned casements; all these casements have segmental brick heads. Above these are two three-light sliding sash windows in altered openings with segmental heads. On the east side is a central rubble stair with a partly blocked round-headed opening below. To the left of the stair is a six-panel door with a segmental head, and to the right a four-pane fixed light. Above the door is a slightly off-centre half-glazed door with a segmental head, and above this, an unslated pentice roof. The west side retains the remains of a central mullioned cellar opening. The ground floor has an off-centre casement, flanked to the left by a blocked opening and to the right by two casements, all with segmental heads. Above, to the left are two blocked openings and to the right are two casements with segmental heads. The south end has three segmental arched openings, containing to the left a six-panel door and a 20th-century flanking light, and to the right two casements. Above are a blocked opening and two casements, and above again, two casements, all with segmental heads. The interior, refitted in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, is reported to contain stone-vaulted cellars.
