Description

The Main Stables, located 200 meters northeast of Belvoir Castle, were built between 1704 and 1705 by John Barker of Rowsley. Originally designed as stables, they now serve as offices and domestic quarters. The building is constructed of coursed ironstone with limestone dressings and features roofs made of graded Swithland slate. It has a U-shaped layout with two storeys and a dormer attic. The main range consists of nine bays, with the central three bays projecting forward under a pediment. There is a central doorway, and the windows throughout are 2-light timber cross casements, most of which retain their original or renewed leaded glass. The eaves cornice is coved and plastered. The gable roof has two gabled dormers on each side of the central pediment, with the gables enhanced into small pediments. The dormer windows are also 2-light casements, and there is one small ridge stack at each end of the roof. The subsidiary ranges are similar but feature multiple roof dormers. The interior is quite plain and has been subdivided into offices and domestic accommodation, with bridging beams that are chamfered and have run-out stops.
