Description

This is a house, originally built as a farmhouse around 1850 and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of ironstone ashlar with limestone dressings, a slate roof, and brick end stacks. The house follows a double-depth plan and presents a three-window facade facing the garden. The main entrance features a central six-panel door with an overlight, contained within a moulded wooden surround, limestone jambstones, and a keyblocked stone lintel. The ground floor has “French” windows, while the first floor windows are 16-pane sash windows, all with matching limestone jambs and lintels. Limestone quoins and projecting, bracketed wooden eaves are also present. A circular limestone plaque sits above the door, inscribed with “cath” to the left of a shield design, “stow” to the right, and “1850” below. The side and rear elevations are built with coarser masonry. A carved head, potentially of medieval origin, is incorporated into the rear left angle at ground level, and the third quoin stone from the bottom is inscribed with the initials "w h" in a medieval-style script. Inside, there is an open-well staircase with stick balusters, a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail, and carved tread ends. Shutters are fitted to all windows on the front facade. The house is believed to have been built as a dower house for Catherine Stow.
