Description
Shoby Priory is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the early 16th century and early 17th century, with later extensions and partial brick encasements from the late 19th century and early 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared ironstone with limestone dressings and features a hipped, ridged tile roof from the 20th century, along with a brick ridge stack and a stone lateral stack with a brick flue.
The house is designed in an L shape and is two stories high with a three-window range. The main front faces the garden and has a large projecting lateral stack to the left. The walling to the right of the stack is made of red brick. There is a 20th-century door to the left of center, which has an overlight and a Tudor-arched head. A shallow cross wing projects to the right of center, featuring a canted bay window on the ground floor and a three-light casement window on the first floor with a hood mould. To the left of the door is a small one-light window, while the right side has a 20th-century window on the ground floor and three-light casements on the first floor.
The wing that projects to the rear left is the oldest part of the house and includes a large five-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion window on the ground floor of the left side elevation, which has a transom. Inside, there is a large open fireplace with a chamfer and a Tudor-arched head. The open-wall staircase, dating from the early 17th century, features vertically symmetrical turned balusters and newel posts with finials. Historically, this building served as a grange for Launde Abbey from the early 13th century to the late 14th century.
