Description
The Church of England School and Schoolhouse, dated 1844, is a school building constructed from limestone ashlar with a plain-tile roof and stone ridge stacks, designed in a Tudor style. It has an H-plan layout, featuring a single-storey central range with four bays, flanked by two cross wings, the right wing being two storeys tall, resulting in a total of six bays.
The entrance is located to the right of the center and features a door with a double-chamfered stone surround, a four-centred head, and a ridged door with ornamental hinges, all set within a gabled stone porch that has a double-chamfered doorway. Above the entrance is the Gillett coat of arms in a circular strap moulding, which includes the motto "SPES MEA IN DEO" and the date 1844.
To the left of the entrance are a pair of two-light stone mullion windows with hood moulds, while to the right is a similar three-light window. The right cross wing, which serves as the schoolhouse, has three-light stone mullion windows on the ground floor and a two-light window on the first floor. The left cross wing features a four-light window, and there is a bell-cote on the right with a gabled ridged stone roof and a single bell. The bell-cote has an off-set buttress and a panel on the cross wing gable that displays a cross and a Latin motto.
All windows are characterized by hollow-chamfered mullions, arched lights, cut spandrels, and hood moulds. The gables are stone-coped with kneelers and topped with ball finials at the apex.
