Description
This is a farmhouse dating from the mid-to-late 19th century, located on the east side of Waltham Melton Road. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof and stone end stacks, featuring squared, paired stone flues. The design follows a central staircase plan. The central bay projects forward and contains a four-panel, part-glazed door set within a chamfered stone surround, positioned within a porch with a ridged stone hood, supported by pierced stone brackets on red sandstone shafts with moulded bases and carved limestone capitals. Above the door is a single-light window with a pointed trefoiled head. This central bay rises above the eaves, topped with a stone-coped gable, kneelers, a finial to the apex, and a trefoil window to the gable. Flanking the central bay are tripartite sash windows to both the ground and first floors. Ground floor windows have basket-arched heads and stone divisions, while the first-floor outer windows have similar heads and the central sash has a pointed arched head. The building features hollow-chamfered stone eaves and stone-coped gables with kneelers.
Attached to the right is a stone wall containing a carriage arch leading to a courtyard. This arch has double-leaf doors and an elliptical-arched stone head, finished with a stone-coped parapet that sweeps up above the arch. An attached, gabled, single-storey outbuilding is located on the far right, with a lancet window and a stone-coped gable including kneelers. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the farmhouse was part of the Duke of Rutland’s estate and shares design characteristics with other significant estate farmhouses in the region.
