Description
A row of seven headstones dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century is located to the south of the porch of the Church of St Peter on Grimston Church Lane in Saxelby. These headstones are made of Swithland slate and line the right (east) side of the path leading to the porch. The two headstones nearest the porch commemorate members of the Bird family: Richard Bird, who died in 1726 at the age of 47, is marked with a winged angel's head above the inscription, while his wife Ann, who died in 1731 at the age of 47, also features lines of verse. To the right of the Birds, there is a group of four headstones belonging to the Simpson family. The earliest is for Elizabeth, daughter of Jasper and Alice Simpson, who died in 1696 and is marked with a winged angel's head above the inscription. To the right is her son Jasper, who died in 1705, and to the left is another Jasper Simpson who died in 1732, both featuring a winged angel's head in relief. Alice, who died in 1740, is also commemorated in this group. Further from the porch is a headstone for Tom, son of Charles and Elizabeth Stringer, who died in 1717, which includes verse and an angel's head below the inscription.
