Description
Shepherd's Cottage, now a house, was built in the mid-19th century with later additions from the mid-20th century. It is constructed of ironstone with limestone ashlar dressings and features Westmorland slate roofs. The cottage has a chamfered plinth, a string course, moulded eaves, and coped and crowstepped gables with kneelers. The first floor is jettied, and there are paired single ridge and single lateral stacks with octagonal stalks.
The building is two storeys tall and has two bays in an L-plan layout. The west front features a chamfered pointed doorway on the right and a three-light mullioned and transomed casement on the left, with a cellar opening below it. The north side has a large mullioned and transomed casement on the left and a gabled wing on the right with a four-centred arched door. Above this door, there is another three-light mullioned and transomed casement.
On the south side, there is a gabled wing with a mullioned and transomed casement on each floor. In the return angle to the right, there is a 20th-century lean-to addition with two casements. The east gable features a cellar opening and, above it, a mullioned and transomed casement on each floor, topped with a pedimented single bellcote. This building was originally designed as a shepherd's lodge and was part of the outbuildings of Stapleford Park.
