Description
The Church of St Philip and James is a parish church built in 1840 and later extended in 1912, designed by W. Railton and H.F. Trayler. It is constructed of random coursed Mountsorrel granite with sandstone ashlar dressings and features Swithland slate roofs. The church includes a small western tower, nave, and chancel. The three-stage tower has stepped angle buttresses, chamfered string courses, and an embattled parapet. Each side of the belfry stage has a single narrow pointed louvred light. The nave's side walls are adorned with pairs of lancet windows, while the chancel, added in 1912, features two-light cusped traceried windows set in moulded and pointed surrounds. The gabled south porch has a plain pointed outer arch. Inside, there is a moulded and pointed chancel arch and a softwood western gallery. All the fittings date from the 19th century.
