Description

The Old Hall is a house dating from the late 15th century, with alterations in the 17th century, restoration in 1858, and some 20th-century changes. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, with diaper work in black brick, sandstone ashlar, and diminishing coursed slate roofs. The main block has an attached four-story angle tower to the left, featuring a hipped roof. The front of the main block is a single-story section with a parapet and an irregular two-story, seven-bay arrangement; two bays to the right have separate gables. The left and centre of the front feature mutilated diaper work. A 20th-century garage door is situated to the left, alongside a small glazing bar casement. Two planked doors and matching double doors are present and all are under timber lintels. A large 3-light mullioned window is flanked by smaller, similar single-light windows to the right. Further to the right, a planked door has a four-centred arched and chamfered surround with a hood mould having label stops. On the first floor, a large central 6-light mullioned and transomed window is flanked by single, smaller 3-light mullioned windows. All mullioned windows have chamfered surrounds and glazing bar lights. A further 3-light mullioned window with diamond leaded lights is found in the left-hand gable, and a blocked four-centred arched window is in the right-hand gable. A small leaded casement sits beyond this, and the angle tower has single 4-centred arched and chamfered openings with drip moulds on the three upper stages. The building was the original home of the Grey family and is associated with Lady Jane Grey.
