Description
Orchard Cottage is a house that likely dates back to the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th to 20th centuries. It features a cruck frame, red brick construction, and a plain-tile roof with brick ridge stacks. The building has a rubble stone plinth and was originally a single storey with an attic, later raised to two storeys in the 20th century. The gable faces the street, with the entrance located to the left in a long range of two windows. The layout consists of four units, including an integrated stable on the left side. The windows include two-light and three-light casements with brick cambered arches, and there is a central part-glazed door under a similar arch. A stable door is located to the left. On the right gable end facing the street, there is a three-light casement on each floor. The rear of the building is mostly blank, except for two small casements.
Inside, there are two pairs of cruck blades, which are probably full and slightly truncated at the base. The interior features two open fireplaces, one of which includes spice cupboards and a partly wattle and daub hood above it. There is also a 19th-century marbled slate fireplace in the ground floor room that faces the street.
