Description

The Woodlands is a house dating from around 1760 to 1770, with a rear wing incorporating a 17th-century structure. A late 19th and early 20th-century extension was added to the left, and the house was refurbished around 1950. The house is constructed of brick, with the right gable and rear wing finished in roughcast and whitewash. It has slate roofs and brick chimneys.

The main 1760s section is two storeys and an attic, with three bays. It features offset band courses at the first and second floor levels, and finely moulded brick eaves with modillions. The windows are wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars, with the ground floor windows transomed and having segmental brick arches. Upper windows are fitted with depressed arches of header brick. A concrete porch, made by the local firm of Wheeler's and displayed at the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1936, stands in the centre of the front. The porch is canted, with a slightly pedimented parapet, leaded side windows, and double doors set within eared architrave surrounds with husk drops. Above the doors is a raised panel decorated with a fruit swag. Further wooden casements are present on the right gable and rear wing, with ground-floor windows having flush-panelled shutters. The rear wing also contains a door with a 20th-century gabled hood supported by brackets.

To the left of the front is a late 19th-century wing, slightly projecting, featuring a concrete bay window on the ground floor and a sash window above.

Inside, the rear wing contains heavy chamfered spine beams and stop-chamfered joists. A single re-used moulded ceiling beam is visible in the front right room.
