Description

The Old White House is a house, likely dating from the 16th to early 17th century, with later alterations. The lower storey is constructed from granite rubble, while the upper storey is rendered and whitewashed, concealing timber framing in the left bays. The left gable has been rebuilt in brick and whitewashed, and the roof is covered with Swithland slate, featuring brick chimneys to the right and rear. The house has two storeys and three bays. The left bay incorporates a former stair projection to the rear, the centre bay a cross passage to the right, and the right bay was originally a single storey. Windows are modern, barred wooden casements: three-light to the ground floor outer bays, two-light to the first floor of the left bays, and a five-light window in a 20th-century gabled first-floor extension to the right. The cross passage has a 20th-century door within an early 17th-century-style moulded wooden frame, which may be a reproduction of the original. Inside, the left bays feature deeply chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, along with stop-chamfered joists. A post in the passage partition displays an ovolo moulded jamb of a former doorway. A larder partition in the centre bay incorporates wavy splat balusters. The first floor contains a stone fireplace with a moulded four-centred arch, while heavy stud partitions separate the first-floor rooms. One roof truss exhibits a high collar and heavy raking struts. Local accounts suggest the house formerly operated as an inn, with a public right of way passing through the cross passage.
