Description

Martinshaw Lodge is a lodge that has been converted into a house, built around 1880. It is constructed from Charnwood granite rubble, with brick and ashlar dressings, and features ornamental timber framing on the upper floor. The building has a steeply pitched slate roof adorned with terracotta ridge pieces and curved barge boards. There are three tall banded red and white brick chimneys and quoins at the corners.

The exterior displays a canted south-east front with three 2-light casement windows, one on each face, and above, a single 2-light casement window set in a tall timber-framed gable that features ornate barge boards and a finial. To the right, there is a lean-to porch with a pointed arch doorway and a plank door fitted with ornate iron hinges. The north-east front includes a 2-light casement window in a brick surround, with a small ashlar trefoil to the left. The jettied timber-framed upper floor has a small trefoil to the left and a central 2-light casement window. To the right, there is a small single-storey wing. The south-west front features two external Charnwood granite stacks, with the left stack rising through the jettied upper floor and gable. The north-west rear has a rendered upper floor with a dormer window that extends through the eaves. This building was likely constructed for the Earl of Stamford and Warrington as a hunting lodge.
