Description

Old Hayes Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse that was altered and refronted in 1756, with 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of rendered red brick and stone, with a Swithland slate roof and two red brick gable stacks. The building has a U-shaped plan and a three-story, three-bay front with a stone plinth, a first-floor band, and a dentillated eaves course. A 20th-century door is centrally positioned and is sheltered by a collapsed 18th-century semicircular lead hood supported on curved wooden brackets. It is flanked by single 20th-century casement windows. Three 20th-century casement windows are above on the first floor, and three more are set within the eaves of the second floor. All the lower-level windows have segmental arched heads. The interior retains early 17th-century moulded panelling, reused in an 18th-century door with L and H hinges. There is also an 18th-century staircase with knopped and turned balusters and a moulded handrail, as well as some 18th-century six-raised-and-fielded-panel doors. The roof is a softwood construction with clasped purlins. The house is surrounded by a deep moat. It is reputed that a panel inscribed 'I.G.1755' is present on the building.
