Description

The Baptist Chapel, dated 1841, is a notable building constructed of red and yellow brick in a chequer pattern, topped with a slate roof and featuring a pedimented gable. It is aligned north-south and faces south. The chapel is two storeys high and includes sill bands and dentilled eaves, which are interrupted by a slightly projecting central bay that has its own open pediment. This bay contains a plaque with pilastered sides and a cornice-hood, inscribed with "GENERAL / BAPTIST CHAPEL / REBUILT / 1841".

The front of the chapel has a regular three-window arrangement. The first-floor windows on the left and right are four-pane fixed lights with wedge-shaped lintels that are grooved as voussoirs and feature raised key blocks. The central first-floor window is a 16-pane glazing bar sash with a raised surround, a bracketed sill, and a bracketed pediment-hood adorned with antefixae and a Greek Revival frieze. A circular light in the gable has a heavily moulded surround, and there is a large Venetian window at the centre of the ground floor, which has a bracketed sill, pilasters, and a raised key block. This window is flanked by a pair of doors set within round-arched recesses, each featuring a fanlight with an arch grooved as voussoirs and a raised key block.

The side elevations have four bays with 16-pane glazing bar sashes and four-pane fixed lights, with the ground floor windows placed in round-arched recesses. The sill strings and dentilled eaves continue from the front.

Inside, each of the two front doorways leads to a staircase that ascends to the gallery, which is panelled and supported by cast iron columns. The chapel retains its oak pews and features a panelled pulpit at the north end, which has a bowed centre and a heavy moulded cornice with dentils. There are steps on each side of the pulpit with turned balusters, open string, and carved tread ends.
