Description

The Cottage is a house, originally an inn, with a core dating back to the 16th century, significantly altered and expanded in later periods. The ground floor is constructed of ironstone rubble, while the upper floor is timber-framed and rendered. It is two stories high and has a two-unit plan, featuring a central doorway set within a latticed porch and more recent canted bay windows to the front. There are two 3-light casement windows on the upper floor. A round-headed archway provides access to the rear on the right side. Gable end stacks are present. A date of 1879 is inscribed in the gable, likely marking its heightening and re-roofing. A rear wing was added in the late 18th century. Inside, substantial remnants of the original timber-framed upper floor and roof remain. These include a rail or wall plate at floor level that supports two pairs of posts with cambered tie beams and arched braces, and one pair of posts with a straight tie beam. Original 18th-century doors and door furniture are also present.
