Description
Plough Cottage is a late 16th and 17th century cottage, originally an inn and later divided into two cottages. It has been slightly raised at a later date. The construction is of coursed rubble stone with a 20th-century shingle roof, and rebuilt brick end stacks. The building consists of three ranges; two are two-storey gabled structures facing forward, representing the original two cottages positioned in front of the former inn. A one-and-a-half storey wing projects to the right at the junction of these ranges. The front of the original two cottages features casement windows – two 3-light windows over two 2-light windows, and two 4-light windows over two 2-light windows. A blank gable faces the front. An attic window, single-light in design, is located at the right end of the wing. The former inn is situated behind and has two storeys with three 2-light casement windows over two 2-light windows. To the right is a glazed door within a glazed porch. A single-storey 20th-century extension is present on the right end of this range. Further 2-light casements and a glazed door are found on the rear elevation. The interior contains three pairs of raised cruk blades visible to the collars, a tree trunk purlin in the original cottages, two inglenooks, and potentially original plank doors. The building was formerly known as the Plough Inn.
