Description
Crick's Retreat is a row of former almshouses consisting of 10 dwellings, built in 1870 for Thomas Crick. The building is constructed from rusticated coursed squared stone with stone dressings and a red brick rear. It features a Welsh slate roof adorned with six moulded stone ridge stacks, and has stone coped gables with kneelers. The design includes facing gables at both ends and in the center, along with two smaller gables in between.
The structure has two storeys, with a total of 15 one and two-light stone mullion sash windows. On the ground floor, there are two-light stone mullion and transom windows at each end, and eight hipped canted painted mullion and transom bays in between. Five segmented archways lead to recessed porches, each with a six-panelled door. The central archway features spandrels carved with a T.C. monogram.
Above the central gable, there is a re-used carved stone relief depicting a shoemaker, inscribed with 'T. Crick, AD1852; original patent'. A stone tablet on the left gable reads, 'Crick's Retreat: Erected 1870 by Thomas Crick in Perpetuam Rei Memoriam of Elizabeth his beloved wife and John Throne Crick their son for deserving relatives in trust with others.' Another stone tablet on the right end gable states, 'for relatives of Thos. Crick - good conduct alone exacted to entitle inheritance. When in possession, disorderly behaviour to cause instant removal. Jehovah Jireth.' A stone flagged terrace is located in front of the row.
