Description

Swinford House is a house that dates from around the mid 19th century, which is a virtual rebuilding of an earlier house from the 17th century. It is constructed of red brick that is covered in ivy, with some earlier brick visible in the south end wall. The roof is hipped and made of slate, featuring lead roll hips and a brick dentil eaves cornice. The house has brick axial stacks.

The building has a double depth plan with three rooms at the front, a smaller room on the right, and an entrance hall to the left of the central room. There is a two-storey outshut on the right-hand side. The exterior is two stories tall and has an asymmetrical four-window east front, plus a one-window two-storey outshut on the right. The three windows on the left are arranged symmetrically around the doorway, which is located to the left of the centre. The windows are two-light moulded cross mullion-transom windows with casements and small panes. The panelled door features a large rectangular over-light with glazing bars and panelled reveals. The doorway and windows have flat brick arches, and the windows have store cills. The outshut on the right has two-light casements with leaded panels.

Inside, there is a staircase from around the mid 19th century that has balusters and a bulbous column newel. The front and back right-hand rooms feature chamfered beams with cymoa stops and high ceilings. It is noted that the house is said to have been the agent's house for the Stanford Park Estate, which is associated with Stanford Hall in the parish of Westrill and Stanford.
