Description
37 and 38 Churchgate is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the 16th century and later. It features a timber-frame structure with a stuccoed front, while the end walls have been rebuilt in brick. The building has a coped gable-ended roof made of Swithland slate and includes one brick ridge stack. It is two stories tall with a five-window range. On the first floor, there are three 9-pane sash windows alternating with two blind recesses. The ground floor has one 9-pane sash window with shutters on the right-hand side, alongside a mix of 20th-century "Georgian" shop fronts, all beneath a pent roof. To the left, there is a one-story 19th-century extension featuring three segment-headed shop windows with keystones and a canted angle with a round-headed doorway. Inside, some exposed timber framing can be seen, along with a simply chamfered rectangular stone fireplace and a room with 17th and 18th-century panelling, all located on the first floor.
