Description

39 and 40 Churchgate are two houses dating from the 16th century and later. They are timber-framed and covered in stucco, with gable ends and a Swithland slate roof. The buildings have two brick ridge stacks and are designed in a cross passage plan, standing two stories tall. In the early 19th century, they were fronted as two double-fronted houses with a two-window range. Both houses feature sash windows with glazing bars and shutters on the ground floor, and have bracketed doorcases. Number 39 includes a rectangular fanlight above a six-panel door, while the door to number 40 has been replaced by a round-headed window. There is also a bracketed box gutter.
