Description
Number 2 on Castle Hill in Mountsorrel is a house that was formerly a school, dated 1742 and altered in the 19th century. It is built of rendered granite rubble stone and has a Swithland slate roof with two ridge stacks and a rear right end stack, all of which are rendered. The entrance faces the garden and features one storey with four 2 over 2 sash windows, a door and a 1-light window to the left, and another door to the right. There is a part-glazed veranda. At the rear, facing Castle Hill, there is a door with an overlight and six windows, mostly 8-pane top-opening. On the left gable end, there is an additional 8-pane window and a slate tablet inscribed 'This English School for poor boys out of Mountsorrel and Swithland given by Joseph Danvers, Esq., 1742'. The roof appears to have 19th-century trusses, but the massive chamfered purlins are likely original.
