Description

The police box in Newtown Linford, Leicestershire, dates from around 1931 and was relocated to its current position in 1952.

Constructed from timber panels with riveted metal brackets on the sides, the box has a rectangular plan measuring approximately 1.8 meters by 2.4 meters. It is oriented north-west to south-east, with the doorway located on the north-west elevation.

The exterior features four sides topped by a very shallow, nearly flat pitched roof that extends over a frieze and cornice. The box is set on a low brick and concrete plinth that it slightly overhangs. Painted dark blue, each elevation is divided into three panels secured by riveted metal brackets around their edges. A plain skirting runs around the base, interrupted only by the door. A sign reading ‘LEICESTERSHIRE CONSTABULARY’ is located on the frieze above the north-west doorway. The frieze on the north-east and south-west elevations displays the word ‘POLICE’ in applied letters, while the south-east elevation features a ventilation grille. The central panel of the north-west facing elevation has a narrow, recessed door with a single central panel, along with a new handle and lock. Each of the two flanking panels has a narrow frosted-glass window divided by a single mullion. The other elevations have a central vertical window of frosted glass divided into four lights by three mullions.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is understood to contain a fitted desk and cabinet, although it no longer has its original telephone equipment.
