Description

Coffin Bridge is a pack horse bridge dating from the 16th or 17th century. It is constructed of granite and slate rubble stone, with later red brick coping. The bridge features two rounded arches and has pointed cut waters on both the upstream and downstream sides. There are side embankments as well. It is located approximately 500 yards west of Anstey Lane and carries a track over Rothley Brook. The bridge is said to be named because the track was used to transport coffins from Cropston to Thurcaston Church.
