Description
The Church of St Botolph is a parish church with a west tower and spire dating from the 13th century. The nave, which includes a clerestory and aisles, was built in the 15th century, while the chancel has a 19th-century north porch and a south vestry added in 1935. The south transept features a vestry designed by Albert Herbert. The church has undergone restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from Charnwood granite rubble with ashlar dressings and has roofs made of Swithland slate. The nave and chancel showcase Perpendicular tracery.
The three-stage west tower is illuminated by lancet windows and is supported by buttresses at the corners. The bell chamber has two-light openings, and the broach spire features two-light lucernes with Y-tracery. Inside, the three-bay nave is supported by cruciform piers on tall bases, with the roof dated to 1636 and 1652, renovated in 1912, while the north aisle roof was replaced in 1952. The pointed chancel arch has two continuously chamfered orders, and the chancel roof was added in 1880.
The church contains medieval benches with decorative heads and poppy heads at the ends, a 14th-century font, and a piscina in the south aisle. The pulpit was designed by Richard Norman Shaw. The chancel features a piscina, an 18th-century communion rail, and a series of notable monuments dedicated to the Phillipps family of Garendon. The churchyard is home to many finely carved Swithland slate headstones.
