Description

Burrough's Almshouses are a group of four almshouses built in 1847, with additions and alterations made around 1970. They were constructed at the expense of Thomas Frewen and are designed in the Tudor Revival style. The buildings are made of random granite rubble and brick, with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. Key architectural features include a chamfered plinth, a moulded coped parapet, coped gables with kneelers and finials, shouldered coped gabled dormers, and four coped brick ridge stacks.

The almshouses are two storeys high and consist of five bays. The symmetrical front has a projecting gabled central bay flanked by lower wings. The central bay features a triple plain lancet window, with a recessed panel above inscribed 'The Rev. Stanley Burrough's Almshouses erected by Thomas Frewen esq of Brickwall, Sussex AD 1847'. Above this is a double lancet window, and further up, a panel containing a shield. On either side of the central bay are chamfered four-centred arched doorways, each flanked by single two-light mullioned casements. The doorways have weather-stripped plank doors.

To the rear, there is a full-width 20th-century lean-to addition that includes four doors and seven casements. The roof features dormers, with two on either side, each containing a two-light mullioned casement. Additionally, there is a single-storey 20th-century brick addition beyond the main structure.
