Description
The Sapcote War Memorial is a First World War memorial made of granite. It is located within an elevated roadside memorial garden, which is enclosed on three sides by a hedge, while the fourth side features a low stone wall topped with a decorative metal fence and an access gate from the pavement.
The memorial itself has a three-stepped octagonal base that supports a square plinth. On top of the plinth stands a tapering octagonal column adorned with a decorative collar and a floriated wheel-like botonee cross. At the base of the column, there is a small bronze laurel wreath inscribed in raised lettering: "A TRIBUTE FROM THEIR COMRADES WHO RETURNED." The front face of the plinth bears incised inscriptions filled with black paint, which read: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN REVERENT AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF SAPCOTE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WARS. 1914 - 1919 1939 - 1945 GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIEND." The names of the fallen soldiers are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth and on an angled wedge-shaped tablet positioned on the upper step.
