Description
The chimney and former engine house at the premises of Birkett and Roberts date from the mid to late 19th century and are located in a prominent position in the town center. The engine house is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof with stone-coped gable ends. It stands two storeys tall, with the end elevation having three windows and the sides featuring five windows, all with cambered heads and glazing bars. The ground floor has been altered to include extra-large doors. The tall chimney, also made of red brick, is notable for its decorative bands of blue and white brickwork. Below a heavy cornice, there is a large double square 'M' in white brickwork on each face of the chimney, which has a square section. This structure serves as a landmark in the area.
