Description
The Town Hall, built in 1861, originally served as a Market Hall and features a modern plaque on the front elevation indicating its date. It is located at the corner of High Street, Market Place, and Midland Road in the town center. The building is constructed of red brick with a slate roof, and has a front gable that is coped with kneelers. It is a single-storey structure with two round arched windows on the front gable end facade, which faces the street. Between the windows is an inset plaque with the date and a clock. The windows have stuccoed moulded bands at impost height that extend around the archivolt, and they feature latticed glazing.
The side facade has five similar windows that are separated by brick pilasters, and there is a brick eaves cornice. Notably, there is a pre-1914 five-bay stepped glazed roof open loggia for the market on the east side, supported by iron columns with decorative ironwork in the spandrels. A modern single-storey entrance block across the ground floor is considered of no interest.
