Description

Overseal House is a Grade II* listed building that consists of four houses now combined into one. It dates from the late 18th century, with some early 19th-century additions. The structure is made of red brick, featuring gauged brick dressings and stone sill bands on the first floor. The central five bays are wider and set higher than the flanking bays, which are from the early 19th century, and there is a plain stone plinth. The hipped roofs are covered with graduated slate and have brick ridge stacks, lead flashings, and moulded stone cornices.

The building is two storeys high and has seven bays in total. The three central bays, which are slightly advanced and pedimented, contain three glazing bar sash windows on the ground floor. On either side, there are semi-circular headed recesses with reeded Venetian doorcases; the south side features a panelled door, while the north side has a half-glazed panelled door, both topped with coloured glass fanlights. The later bays on either side have central glazing bar sash windows. Above, there are seven similar glazing bar sash windows, with a smaller inserted window on the south side of the northernmost window. The rear elevation mirrors this arrangement but includes a central bow on the ground floor. All windows are topped with flat gauged brick arches.

Inside, the house boasts an elegant stick baluster curving staircase with a wreathed handrail in the northern hall. There is also a large early 19th-century rear sitting room featuring a marble fireplace adorned with acanthus leaf decoration, along with original beaded mahogany doors and original cornice and skirting.
